Will these passes help minimize long lines at toll plazas by encouraging more people to use prepaid or digital payment options? And could this result in a smoother flow of traffic, especially during busy travel periods?
On the flip side, if a large number of users start using these passes, could it put a strain on the toll collection system, either financially or operationally? The introduction of annual and lifetime toll passes is set to greatly enhance the efficiency of toll collection and alleviate congestion on national highways. These passes, available for ₹3,000 per year for an annual option and ₹30,000 for a 15-year lifetime option, will enable private vehicle owners to travel seamlessly across all national highways without the need to stop at toll plazas.
Currently, private vehicles account for 53% of toll transactions but only contribute 21% of total toll revenue. By integrating these passes with the FASTag system, the government aims to streamline toll collection, minimize delays, and improve convenience for commuters. Although the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) may face a temporary dip in revenue, the long-term advantages include better traffic flow, reduced congestion, and a more efficient transportation network.
